The Process of Polishing Concrete
Surface Preparation
The initial phase involves preparing the concrete surface. Any existing coatings or adhesives need to be removed to expose the raw concrete. For new installations, the concrete is allowed to cure before the polishing process begins.
Diamond Grinding
This is where the polishing truly starts. A heavy-duty polishing machine, equipped with diamond-impregnated discs, grinds down the concrete surface. The process starts with a coarse grit and gradually moves to finer grits.
Densification
After grinding, a liquid chemical hardener, or densifier, is applied to the concrete to fill the pores, providing extra hardness and durability.
Concrete Polishing
After densification, the concrete is polished using progressively finer grits of diamond discs. The final grit level (typically between 400-1500) will determine the sheen of the floor, with higher grits providing a higher shine.
Sealing Concrete Floors
The final step is to apply a sealant, which enhances the gloss and protects the floor from stains and water damage.
